Sony RM-VL710 Quick Programming Guide:

Enter preset codes:
Press [Set] and [Menu] at the same time or until the component LEDs start to flash. Now choose the Component Select button you would like to configure. Enter the four-digit code as found on the code list, followed by [Ent] to save.

If the [Set] LED flashes five times the code number entered was invalid, try again.

Note: it is not necessary to reconfigure a component button to control a particular type of device, as this is done automatically when a code is entered. All component buttons except for [TV] can be changed from their default device type. Entering a new preset code will not erase buttons that contain a learned signal.

Search for a preset code:
Press [Set] and [Menu] at the same time or until the component LEDs start to flash. Now choose the Component Select button you would like to configure. To search through the database, alternate between pressing [Channel +] or [Channel -] and [Power]. When your device turns on or off, press [Ent] to save.

Note: when all available codes for a device category have been searched through, the component LED will flash three times.

If the remote has been programmed in the past and code search does not appear to be working, enter the default Sony preset code to ensure that the button is set to control the correct type of device.

Learn infrared signals:
Hold [Set] for three seconds or until the [Set] LED illuminates. Now choose the component followed by the specific button you would like to learn a signal on. While the [Set] LED flashes, aim the original device’s remote control at the front of the RM-VL710 and press and hold the source button until the component LED illuminates again.

To learn a command on a Component Select or System Control button: Follow the directions above but press and hold the component or system button for three seconds or until the [Set] LET starts to flash.

If the [Set] LED flashes twice the button already contains a learned signal and must be reset (see instructions below).

If the [Set] LED flashes five times the code did not capture correctly, try again.

Note: it is not possible to learn a command on the [Rec] + [Play] double-key sequence; instead learn on [Rec] by itself.

Program a micro macro anywhere! Line up every remote with all the commands you need, then when learning quickly press all buttons in order. You should be able to learn a 3 or 4 step macro in this manner onto any button.

Clear learned commands:
For general buttons: Hold [Set] for three seconds or until the [Set] LED illuminates. Now press and hold the component button and the button under that component that you would like to clear. As the command is cleared the [SET] LED will turn off.

For Component Select or System Control buttons: Hold [Set] for three seconds or until the [Set] LED illuminates and, before releasing [Set], press the component or system button you would like to clear. As the command is cleared the [Set] LED will turn off.

For all buttons under a component: Hold [Set] for three seconds or until the [Set] LED illuminates. While holding the [Stop] key, press the Component Select button you would like to clear. As commands are cleared all component LEDs will turn off.

Program System Control or Component Select macros:
Press [Set] and the Component Select or System Control button you would like to record the macro on. Next, navigate the remote and enter up to 16 commands from any of the remote’s devices. When finished, press [Set] to save. To play Component Select macros back you must hold the button for two seconds.

If the [Set] LED flashes twice the button already contains a macro and must be reset (see instructions below).

Note: if a component or system button contains a learned signal it will take operational precedence over the macro. If the “Sony Power On” feature has been activated on a component it will always be transmitted before the macro plays.

Clear macros:
Hold [Set] and the Component Select or System Control button you would like to reset for three seconds. When the component LED blinks three times the macro is cleared.

Reassign volume buttons:
Press [Set] and [Menu] at the same time or until the component LEDs start to flash. If you would like to use the receiver’s volume controls for all components, press [Muting] and [Volume +] at the same time. If you would instead like to use the TV’s volume control under video devices and the receiver for audio devices, press [Muting] and [Volume -] at the same time.

As the two keys are held all component LEDs that will use the receiver’s volume controls will illuminate.

If all Component Select LEDs flash twice no component has been assigned amplifier functions and this setting cannot be changed.

Change the “Sony Power On” setting:
Press [Set] and [Menu] at the same time or until the component LEDs start to flash. While holding the [Power] button, press the Component Select button you would like to enable or disable the “power on” feature. When the [Power] button is held by itself, only those components that have the “power on” feature enabled will illuminate.

If the Component Select LED flashes twice the preprogrammed code on that component is for a brand other than Sony and this feature cannot be used.

Note: if a component button contains a learned signal it will take operational precedence over the “Sony Power On” feature.

Copy a component to a new position:
Press [Set] and [Menu] at the same time or until the component LEDs start to flash. Now press and hold the Component Select button you would like to move for three seconds, or until all other component LEDs start to flash. While continuing to hold the button, press the flashing button you would like to move this device to. As these two keys are pressed they will illuminate and all other LEDs will stop flashing.

If the [Set] LED flashes twice you cannot copy the [TV] device to a new position.

Lock the remote from use:
To lock the remote press [Power], [TV/Video] and [Channel +] at the same time. While the remote is locked all LEDs will flash twice when any button is pressed.

To unlock the remote press [Power], [TV/Video] and [Channel -] at the same time.

Reset the remote to factory defaults:
Press the [Power], [TV/Video] and [Volume -] buttons simultaneously. All LEDs will illuminate, and then go out one by one. When the last LED turns off the remote has been reset.
