If you’re the proud owner of a Sony PlayStation 3 and you enjoy using your console to play movies on Blu-ray Disc, you’ve undoubtedly come across an issue of control... or the lack thereof: the stock wireless game controllers just don’t make very good remote controls. Sony has also realized this shortcoming, and offers an optional remote control accessory designed to give the high-tech PS3 a level of control more familiar to movie aficionados.
As a companion to our original article “Adding IR Remote Control to the Sony PS3”, which exposed a DIY method of integrating control over the PS3 with traditional universal remote controls, I’m pleased now to present the flip side of the coin: a review of Sony’s official Bluetooth-based BD Remote Control, which decidedly cannot be integrated with any universal remotes. Although the concept of adding another remote to the coffee table goes against every “remote consolidation” fiber in my being, there are some very good reasons why you might want to do so!
For those of you who desire an off-the-shelf infrared solution, we’ve also updated our article mentioned above with a comparison of the commands offered by the Nyko Blu-Wave Infrared Remote for PlayStation 3 and the Logic3 PS3 Blu-ray / DVD Remote Control.
