Strengths:Easy learning functions, simple procedure to update at any time. Feels right.
Weaknesses:none as yet
Review:I have just received the unit from USA and am delighted with the ease of programming and the learning capabilities.
It has not failed to recognise any of my units. I thought i might have problems with the SKY satellite unit but it learnt no problem. I would recommend this unit to anyone considering buying a universal controller

Strengths:Does everthing it's supposed to do. Easy to program, easy to "learn" key functions.
Weaknesses:None (considering I only paid $39).
Review:Programed in codes for my TV (Mitsubishi), Surround Sound system (TEAC), DVD (Panasonic), and VCR (Toshiba) and it did almost all functions. I only had to "teach" a few keys from the TEAC remote for the surround sound.

It would not work with my Digital Cable box, so I had to "teach" it each key individually.

Entire process took about a half an hour. For $39 what else could I ask for or expect? What a pleasure not to have to sqirm around looking for 5 different remotes.

Strengths:Does what it's supposed to do.
Weaknesses:Manual is terribly written.
Review:Bought after my kids complained about having to deal with five different remotes.

Biggest difficulty was with the SAT/CBL button. The manual does not tell you, but the default on this is SAT. So some of the program codes listed for a cable box do not work until you reassign the key to CBL. In fact, the unit will not even accept some of the codes.

I learned that from calling tech support, which was not a great experience. Got frustrated with the voice recognition system and hung up. When I called back I was put right through to a real person. Not a great real person, but a real person nonetheless.

Once I got over that hurdle, everything else fell into place. Used the learning function to program the other cable remote functions with no problems.

Review 85 made on Tuesday December 30, 2003 at 12:04 PM.
Strengths:Did almost all I wanted
Weaknesses:First one lasted one year.
Second lasted about four years.
Cannot have TV mode volume control TV and VCR mode volume control amp.
Labels wear off.
Review:Not durable enough and want more flexibility (see weaknesses). Otherwise good for the price.

Review 84 made on Monday December 29, 2003 at 10:43 AM.
Strengths:Does everything promised.
Weaknesses:I'm being VERY picky here.
Doesn't have enough standard codes.
Would have liked a couple more buttons.
Review:I just bought this remote for my mom and totally tech-illiterate step-dad (no insult, it's the truth). The remote is great!!

---SONY COMPONENTS---
Their Sony VCR worked immediately with no codes or anything, which made for a great OOBE (Out-Of-Box-Experience).

---STANDARD CODES---
Their Mitsubishi Big Screen TV worked as soon as the code was entered with no further programming.

I had to try two different codes for their Receiver/Amp (can't remember the brand). Both codes worked, but the second worked better. The buttons on the remote made more sense with the second code. The first would switch devices, but you must push the VCR button to get to the TV mode on the amp. Second code I tried was correct, but there is still some fine-tuning that needs to be done with this device.

---THE LEARNING FEATURE---
The digital cable box (General Instrument) and the DVD (Mitsubishi) had no codes that worked. I manually entered all the listed codes, and I tried the auto-search feature to no avail. So I began programming each button individually using the learn feature. THIS WORKED GREAT!! And it was a lot quicker than what I thought. You can teach it many buttons very quickly.

---PHYSICAL FEEL & OTHER NOTES---
The remote seems to have an excellent range and wide area, so you don't need to 'aim' it. The buttons glow pretty brightly. The weight is okay, and it fits great in the hand. Alternate functions written (in blue and orange) above the buttons can be tough to see.

---SO FAR UNTESTED ITEMS---
I haven't tried the macro buttons yet, but see no reason why they wouldn't work. Also I don't know how long the ink on the keys will hold up.

I also want to try deleting some standard functions of the keys. The TV automatically switches to Antenna 1 input if a channel +/- button is hit while in TV mode (this is the TV's standard even with its own remote). Since the Antenna 1 input is unused you get a static (noise) screen. I hate this on all TV's. So I'll delete the channel buttons function or just make it work the cable box regardless of mode.

I made the volume keys always work the TV volume, and set the cable box volume to the max. This is great too. No more 'dueling' dual volume controls.

---THE FINAL CUT---
You haven't bought it yet????
If you have 3 remotes or more, it is well worth the 60 bucks. It completely eliminated 5 remotes, and has room to spare.

Review 83 made on Monday November 3, 2003 at 9:24 AM.
Strengths:easy to program, great macros
Weaknesses:discret codes(see review) buttons wear off. Doesn't work right out of the box on most sony gear, as advertised.
Review:this is the best 37 dollar remote i've seen. Our company has been selling these things for about a year and a half. These are great for the budget minded client. also great for the budget minded installer. remote is very easy to program but lacks discrete codes, especially for tv inputs. Solution is here--got to have a pronto. download discrete input codes from this web site, then learn them into the sony. Works like a champ, especially if you have toshiba or kenwood products to program. only problem is you need a pronto $399 or more. Fortunately i work for a company that has proto dedicated for this reason. macro's are great but when the tv will not follow the inputs for a certain operation, the macros then are worthless. (this is true on all tosiba tv's and any kenwood products). Besides that this a great remote. I own 2. by the way a had a pronto for 6 months. I sold it and bought 2 of these remotes. i'll put my money where my mouth is on this one.

Strengths:The best hard buttoned remote ever.
Weaknesses:Cannot think of any
Review:Having owned many remotes in the past I decided i'd had enough of touchscreens (having to phsically look each time I wanted to change channels etc). I ditched my Pronto for something more to my tastes. This is a fantastic learning remote that has just about every command you could need whilst ramaining uncluttered. I've literally had no problems with it. Also its worth noting the rubber running around the remotes edge. I have dropped this a few times and this really works. Try dropping a pronto! I am almost developing a phobia that hard button remotes are being eliminated out of home cinema remotes so i'm getting another. Go buy.
