Review: | When my aging Universal Automator unexpectedly gave up the ghost recently, I shuddered at the prospect of programming a replacement for my bedroom theater system (a home theater pro had what seemed to be a dickens of a time getting the Automator programmed properly for my system several years ago). But the R5, also from Universal, was an irresistible value at $19.95, and a snap to program as the Automator's replacement.
The R5 manual comes with the usual library of pre-programmed codes for most major brands. Finding my components was a snap, all except for my Pioneer DVD/Tivo deck. But the R5 was simple to program manually using the remote's learning feature. In under fifteen minutes, I was up and running.
The R5 also has punch-thru macro capability that allows you to, for example, assign the volume and channel buttons to operate the same no matter which component is selected. There's also a power macro that allows you to turn multiple components on and off with a single button push.
Not a fan of touchscreens? This is the remote for you. The R5 leaves off the LCDs in favor of a full compliment of hard buttons that are well organized and easy to operate by feel alone. It may be a tad clunky looking compared to the latest streamlined offerings from Logitech, but for old-school functionality, this one's a winner, especially for the price. |
