We purchased the Sony 400 DVD player in August 2005 and had no problems for several months. However, in early 2006 we lost all the title information we had manually entered. Essentially, the machine “reloaded” all the discs, wiping out all the information. We reentered the information a few times and it kept doing it. We called Sony and they suggested that our power wasn’t “clean” enough, so we purchased an expensive power conditioning unit (it cost more then the DVD player!!), retyped all the information and had the problem again. We contacted Sony for a replacement unit. We had the same problem, and the unit was replaced a second time. With our third unit, we haven’t taken the time to reenter the information. Instead we are using printed spreadsheets to keep track of our CDs/DVDs. Sony says they have no record of anyone else experiencing this problem. However, I see from doorpro's comments that we are not alone. I'm not aware of any built in MASS DESTRUCT sequence as doopro mentions. Has any one else had this problem? Has anyone else seen the Class Action Suit against Sony for problems with DVD players? It doesnt' include this model, but it makes you think...... In general we love all our Sony products, but this issue has been very frustrating. slaperk On 1136246780, doorpro said... Hello all,
I have just bought that DVD changer I have ever had but beware guys as there are a few anomalies with it..
Now admittedly most of the problems are just the differences between this and past Sony machines but I found a problem that caused me 21 hours of H.E.LL ..
So here I was, it was unboxed and installed and now I had to start loading the thing almost to capacity I might add (350 DVD’s) and I knew that I had to start labeling and adding them to various categories and folders but this was easy with the DVD cases in front of me and it only took about 5 hours.
Now for the problem... I turned the machine on a couple of days ago to show it off to a friend and it locked up. So what did I do? The same thing that any other man would do, I started pressing buttons, stop, pause, open door, and on and on I went..
Then I turned it off and then back on again... GONE!!! everything was gone all I had were 350 question marks so the machine had lost its memory of all my work and I have just spent 21 hours re-doing them all over, but this time without the cases handy, cause lets face it they all got tossed in a box.
So what I had to do was sit and watch the first few seconds (sometimes minutes) of each movie to see what was what and of course I knew about 75 percent but then there were those movies that play for about 15 minutes before they start to put anything on the screen, normally not bad but in this case it was .... Well you get the Idea...
So on finishing I realized that I had just gone through my HD Tivo finding hidden codes and switches that are built in but the manufacturer either doesn’t want you to know about them of perhaps they are just flukes of programming, either way if this Sony has a MASS DISTRUCT sequence it would have been nice of them to tell me DO NOT touch these buttons in this order or it DELETES everything which is what happened.
Well, that’s my story, sorry for going on but I was both wondering if this has happened to anyone else and also wanted to warn any unsuspecting owners of the Sony DVP-CX995V
Oh yeah, Happy New year to you all. Doug.

I have the exact same problem I'm still not sure what triggers it but every few weeks or so the 995 looses all of the DVD title data. (replaces them ALL with "?") I called Sony as well and they suggested a voltage spike- but I'm already using TrippLite conditioning so I called BS. I basically got "Well that's all I can suggest happended" from the CSA But it occurs at such a frequency that I too have given up on typing the data in and just made up an Excel Spredsheet to add the details to when we add a DVD. Stupid when it should do this for you... Has ANYONE heard of a fix for this phenomena?? Thanks WopOnTour On December 16, 2006 at 10:47, slaperk said...

To fix the autoplay problem all you do is push open instead of power and pick your dvd there you go!!!

Another autoplay fix (not mine but I wish I had thought of it) is to put a CD with a few minutes of silence or even a custom burned DVD in slot 1. Yes, you sacrifice a slot, but you have 399 others to fill. When you finish playing the title you want to watch and are ready to power down, load up the disc in slot 1, wait a few seconds and then power down. If you can program macros into your remote, it is all automatic:
POWER DOWN sequence: a) go to slot 1 b) pause 2-5 seconds c) power off
The next time you power up, a disc with silence (or even a spoken or text message if you know how to author DVDs or CDs) will begin playing.
I've found it to be a blessing to the annoying autoplay "feature".
However, I have to admit I like dankchief's solution too.

Hello, I just bought the CX995V and the Harmony 880. I've managed to load the "csv" file from DVD PROFILER to the Harmony, but when I select the 'media' button it shows the folders and when I select a folder it shows the DVD'S, but when I push the button for a DVD nothing happens. I have done the setup several times with various results, such as; when I push the button for a DVD; it will change chapters, or it will bring up disc explorer, or it will power off, etc. etc.. Does anyone know how I should setup the remote and what items I should change? I have been at this for seven days now and have run out of ideas.

Just today (1-22-07) my almost one year old unit locked up, just as indicated by Doug. I shut it off and back on, only to find the same condition on the screen. My long day of typing information for some 300 + discs was GONE. Sony database showed nothing. Online chat was a complete wast of time. I will try the hotline tomorrow, but reading this thread has me afraid to enter all that stuff again. I already have a spreadsheet, but what a waste not to be able to use the thing as it was advertised. This could be a truly great machine if it worked faster, had a on-screen menu that was easier to read, did not start a disc every time you turn it on, and didn't drop all of your work down a hole. Sony needs to pay attention and do some more engineering on this thing. Kerry

I understand the problem you're having with the CX995V, I ran across the same problem going from the CX985V to the CX995V. i.e. In the CX985V selecting a DVD from within the Sony Explorer was as easy as typing in the DVD #. For some reason this does not work on the CX995V, which I'm guessing is a bug on Sonys part. To get around this you have to do the following:
1. DVD: Stop 2. DVD: Display 3. DVD: Enter 4. DVD: "XXX" (DVD to go to) 5. DVD: Enter 6. DVD Display
Stupid place to have to go to. Now to get your Harmony remote to do this automatically (from the Media menu you've already uploaded into it) you will need to contact Logitech support and have them code the above functions into your profile. I had them do this and now it works the way I want it to.

don't mean to thread hijack, but my question directly related to this DVDplayer (actually the CX985V)
DVD player sound; fiber optic or digital coax
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have had sound issues since the day I received it. I thought at one time it was AV receiver related, am now convinced it's the DVD player. ( have had 3 receiver since) the issue I am having is every know and then I will turn my whole system on, and I will not get sound from my DVD player. I know that it is the fault because I get no light in the fiber optic cable when I unplug it from the receiver. I have an extended warranty on this player and called for service. They told me they send a empty box and I would have to send the unit out for repair. With about 200 disc already in specific slots (macroed remote) I wasn't about to take them all out to send the DVD player to be fixed. And somehow I think it would come back still with the issue, only because I bought it from Sony refurbished. The issue isn't all the time and the sound will eventually come on, so for now I will have to live with it.
So my long winded question is, how would digital coax compare for sound? I ask because hopefully the issue is only through fiber optic.
If the fiber optic is my best bet then I might as well ask; how good it the HDMI up-scaling model of this same player DVP-CX995V? I have a upscaling Pioneer Elite VSX 82TSX and I wonder if this does a better job of scaling my DVDs as is.

Hey Tj,
You would never be able to hear any difference, if you switched to digital coax.
Your second question relating to PQ I cannot answer. LOL... I had the opprotunity to audition one of the 995's the other day and it wouldn't read a single DVD. This was used of course but none the less, not too impressive.
I would be surprised if the 995's scaling would be better than the elite 82. But then again I haven't read anything negative about the Sony's capabilities in that area. I guess the one plus would be not having the additional equipment (receiver) in line. DVD player to display, rather than DVD to Reciever to Display.
If you do end up with one, post how the PQ compares to the elite's abilities. I would like to know.
Best of Luck...!
