Of note at Toshiba’s booth this year was their impressive 57HLX82 LCOS 57” rear projection television. This set apparently features the industry’s first and only true 1080 progressive HD image. The 57HLX82 is only 18” deep and utilizes three 1920x1080 resolution chips along with an 8,000-hour lamp. The display also includes a DVI interface with HDCP and a 15-pin D-Sub input for PCs. The 57HLX82 will retail for $9000.
Also new in the display category is Toshiba’s new projector. Their TDP-MT8U is a DLP front projector that employs TI’s new HD2 DLP chip with 1280x720 resolution. The unit offers 1000 ANSI lumens of brightness, a 1400:1 contrast ratio and Carl Zeiss optics. The MT8 features Faroudja’s DCDi+ video processing. The “+” part adds adaptive luminance, chrominance enhancement and scaling with frame rate conversion. The projector also includes a full set of discrete codes (impressive for Toshiba), DVI input with HDCP support, RS232C port, memory settings by input and more. It retails for $10000.
Two new compact 5-disc DVD carousels are now available, the $199 SD-2815 and $249 SD-3815. Both models feature component video output, while the SD-3805 offers Toshiba’s ColorStream Pro progressive scan. Common features include MP3 and JPEG compatibility and expanded front panel controls. A new DVD recorder and DVR, the RD-X2, offers a built-in 80 gigabyte hard drive, for up to 75 hours of video, along with a DVD-R/DVD-RAM recorder supporting between 2 hours and nearly 4 and a half hours of video. Other features include a full cable TV tuner, 32-event program timer with VCR+, four inputs, true integrated operation between the DVD recorder and HDD, customizable bitrates from 2.0mbps to 9.2mbps (all are “slightly variable”) and a library function supporting up to 3000 titles. The RX-X2 will sell for $1499.
Yamaha took CEDIA as an opportunity to display a wide range of new components. First up was a demonstration of their next DLP projector, in a separate room at the show, supported solely by other Yamaha equipment. The new DPX-1000 utilizes TI’s HD2 DLP chipset with 1280x720 native 16:9 resolution. The $12000 projector includes a 1:1.6 motorized zoom lens that can throw a 100” image, motorized lens shift, 270 watt UHP lamp, high-speed six segment color wheel and Faroudja DCDi progressive scan video processing. The projector includes component, RGB, composite and S-Video inputs, plus an RS232 serial port and 12V trigger. Finally, the projector is extremely quiet at less than 30dB, employing a Scirocco fan combined with twin silencer ducts.
